CRITIQUE It is an honor to give detailed, constructive comment to your peers. This exchange of interpretation, example, and alternatives is mutually beneficial to those giving and receiving comment. Affinity for another’s work is not required. Exercising and building your ability to verbally evaluate objects, events, and concepts will benefit you greatly—just going through the motions during critique will numb the senses and dull the mind. If you find it difficult to put words to your thoughts during an active critique, use the message board and the time it allows to develop a response.
EVALUATION Assignment grades will be based on the following criteria: Exploration—in-depth research coupled with a relentless drive to discover/know. This includes book research, seeking and evaluating critique from your peers and end users/readers, as well as research in form, materials, and processes. Exploration can be both an internal and external action so do not overlook your personal interests and inclination—what drives and engages you? Do not react to assumptions about what ‘research’ is. Yes, go to the library and read, talk to experts, and review your work with others, but do not overlook strategies in research of form and process (I know I am being redundant, but this is very important). You are attending a university and should take full advantage of its offerings. Iteration—multiple solutions and thorough execution of each. Craft—precision and refinement of iterations and the final artifact. Concept—rationale which validates the artifact’s existence. Creativity—ability to discover a unique solution. Quality participation and contribution to the studio environment, critiques, and class discussion will be considered. Late assignments will receive a failing grade.
